Lesson 8: Poetry podcast [listening, speaking]
Dec 31st
Posted by wiktor in English Plan Blog
Another lesson for brave teachers and groups. There is a lot going on here – discussions about attitudes to poetry, listening to information about poems and poets – finally – listening and discussing the poems themselves. The podcast in question is usually a nice, short affair published by Penguin.
An ideal group for this lesson would be a fairly high-level class in need of a challenge, or students who enjoy discussing new and authentic insights into English. This does not need to take up a whole 90-minute lesson (probably won’t, anyway): it is OK to turn this into a quicker activity tied in with other elements.
The website itself requires some complex navigation (see Teacher’s notes), so make sure this is done before students engage with the task.

Lesson 1: A perfect workplace [Listening, interviewing, presenting]

The focus of this lesson is a note-taking activity based on a talk given by Jason Fried as part of Ted Talks. The talk focuses on advantages and disadvantages of working in offices.
This has worked very well with not-so-serious business groups, and the timings and stages can be adapted to suit various levels. the video, if played online, can be shown with English subtitles, which may further reduce the difficulty level. Lots of speaking (interviewing, teamwork, presenting) in the second part of the lesson.
