Lesson 2: A Visual Dictionary [vocabulary, speaking, learning strategies]

Dec 30th

This webquest is an introduction to a little-known, but awesome resource. Merriam-Webster’s visual dictionary lets learners experience new words in rich context (images, diagrams, pronunciation recordings). It’s good for pretty much any level, and the stages can be extended or compressed depending on how proficient your group is.

This works best if learners get access to an IWB in a later stage of the lesson (when they’re presenting their images to other pairs). Make sure your browser can handle the pronunciation: there are some issues with Firefox (see Teacher’s notes).

Lesson 1: A perfect workplace [Listening, interviewing, presenting]

The focus of this lesson is a note-taking activity based on a talk given by Jason Fried as part of Ted Talks. The talk focuses on advantages and disadvantages of working in offices.

This has worked very well with not-so-serious business groups, and the timings and stages can be adapted to suit various levels. the video, if played online, can be shown with English subtitles, which may further reduce the difficulty level. Lots of speaking (interviewing, teamwork, presenting) in the second part of the lesson.
